James W. Vaupel (1945 - 2022)
It is with great sorrow that EAPS shares the news that Professor James W. Vaupel sadly passed away on 27th March after a short period of illness. Jim Vaupel was one of the key demographers of our time and a world leading scholar in the field of ageing, health and longevity. Creative researcher, science communicator and builder of demographic institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and Population Europe, Jim was a warm colleague to many. He was also an inspiring mentor for cohorts of demography students, amongst others in the European Doctoral School of Demography EDSD that he helped found.
Jim was an enthusiastic and long term member of EAPS, Chair of the EAPS Advisory Board and 2018 Laureate of the EAPS Award for lifetime achievements.
Jim’s passing away is a great loss for our field and for all who had the privilege to know him. He will be dearly missed.
