James W. Vaupel (1945–2022)
We sadly announce the passing of Professor Dr James W. Vaupel (2 May 1945 – 27 March 2022), co-founder of our network Population Europe and the European Doctoral School of Demography, founding director and director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, the Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging (2013–2017) and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics, and Professor of Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Natural Sciences at the University of Southern Denmark.
Demographers, who had the great privilege to collaborate with him in the last decades, will always remember him as a visionary researcher, academic teacher and engaged supervisor, full of enthusiasm, inspiration and care for his people, a great colleague and a reliable friend, but most of all: one of the great demographers of our times. Our discipline, and particularly European demography, owes James W. Vaupel a lot. We will hold his memory in utmost honour.
